75% Funded BS 8555 Environmental Management System

This British Standard provides guidance to all organisations on the phased implementation, maintenance and improvement of a formal Environmental Management System (EMS). BS 8555 is of particular benefit to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) due to its flexible and phased approach.

Main Features of BS 8555

• Phased process designed around a generic environmental management system.
• In line with ISO 14001, the international environmental standard, and the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
• Additional development of environmental performance indicators (EPIs) to reflect the environmental aspects of activities, products or service delivery. EPIs can be used within the context of an EMS and as part of other performance evaluation and reporting frameworks. e.g. Corporate reporting or benchmarking.

The Six Phases of the Standard

1. Commitment and Establishing the Baseline.
2. Identifying and Ensuring Compliance with Legal, and other Requirements.
3. Developing Objectives, Targets and Programmes.
4. Implementation and Operation of the Environmental Management System.
5. Checking, Audit and Review.
6. Environmental Management System Acknowledgement (via an external audit).

Benefits of BS 8555

• Phased approach - can pick the appropriate level for the company, year on year if necessary. Phase 6 takes the company on a route to ISO 14001 registration.
• Can be cheaper and more flexible route to achieving accredited environmental management for your company - maybe you only need an Environmental Policy and to address legal compliance.
• Focus on benchmarking - proves continual improvement and focuses on business efficiency.

Cost

Glasgow City Council have approved a grant of 75% to eligible companies which means the cost to your company could be as little as £200 and up to a maximum of £2400 for implementation services and training.
