Personal Noise Exposure Monitoring

In order for the client to comply with requirements laid out by the Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 and Element 15: Industrial Hygiene of their internal Health and Safety Management Systems, personal noise and air monitoring needed to be performed. M&A conducted full-shift personal noise exposure monitoring on selected employees using noise dose meters to establish the employee daily personal noise exposure (LEP,d). Instantaneous sound level measurements were also performed throughout the monitoring period to assist with identification of noise sources where implementation of noise control options may be feasible.

Upon completion of the on-site activities, M&A reviewed the collected data, compared it to the applicable action levels, and prepared a summary report that presented M&A's findings and recommendations. The report included the following information:

  • Methods that were used;
  • Dose meters, sound level meter and calibrator details (model/type, date of last full verification etc.);
  • Key observations;
  • Noise level measurement/exposure results, measurement time periods and process operations being carried out during those periods;
  • Noise map of the production areas, and
  • Recommendations.

Health and Safety Audits

As part of its contract with Scottish Water it is a requirement that the client carry out a detailed health and safety audit of its wastewater treatment facility on a biannual basis. M&A provide this service which included the following activities:

  • A series of visits by a health and safety consulting professional from M&A to gather data and interview personnel on health and safety issues;
  • Review and evaluation of the gathered data and preparation of a Health and Safety Audit, and
  • Preparation of a brief summary Health and Safety Audit Report identifying gaps (if any) between current practices and procedures and the requirements of the HSAWA and supporting legislation.

Risk Assessment Training

The client had recently launched a new Risk Assessment programme at their Livingston facility and they wished to provide training to reinforce the new programme.

M&A developed a training programme outline-agenda and associated training material for the purpose of delivering risk assessment training to employees. The risk assessment training programme focused on equipping employees with the tools and information required to assist them in completing risk assessments for their employer. M&A personnel will conducted five (5) risk assessment training sessions of six (6) hours duration each, to a total of sixty (60) employees.

Health and Safety Ongoing Support Services (hSOS)

The client identified internal resource issues with regards to developing and maintaining health and safety work, management programmes and training requirements at their Teesside facility. M&A provided basic hSOS services for the Teesside facility, to include:

  • assistance in defining Health and Safety needs of employees;
  • delivery of Health and Safety training;
  • review current and new legislation and up-date the permits and procedures accordingly on a regular basis (target yearly);
  • provision technical assistance to all levels of management on Health and Safety matters, and
  • writing/approving Health and Safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
