Air Quality Strategy

Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 requires the Government and the devolved administrations for Scotland and Wales to produce an Air Quality Strategy containing standards and objectives for improving ambient air quality. The Air Quality Strategy, published in January 2000, sets targets for reducing levels of eight air pollutants and provides a framework for businesses to play a role in improving air quality. The eight pollutants referred to in the Strategy are as follows: benzene, 1.3-butadiene, carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, particles (PM10), sulphur dioxide and ozone. The new targets are to be phased in over a total of five years starting on 31 December 2003.
