EC Landfill Directive – ban on co-disposal from July 2004
The EC Landfill Directive ban on co-disposal of hazardous wastes with other wastes, and the
requirements for pre-treatment of wastes prior to landfill has significant implications for
the UK contaminated land industry. Reliance on landfilling or "dig-and-dump" as a remedial
approach is no longer possible, and is likely to increase the demand for proven sustainable
in-situ and ex-situ remedial technologies. A range of remedial technologies are available r
anging from physical and chemical processes, such as permeable reactive barriers and soil-vapour
extraction technologies to biological processes such as bioremediation, natural attenuation, and
phytoremediation.
The (CLARINET) Contaminated Land Rehabilitation Network for Environmental Technologies in
Europe provides provides useful information on contaminated land
management in Europe.
