AIR ISSUES AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - ARCHIVED
Changes To Air Regulations
In August, 2001, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) has made
wide-ranging changes to the Department's Air Pollution Control Regulations, 310 CMR 7. These
include dropping outdated language and reorganizing the remaining sections, resulting in much
greater clarity, efficiency and environmental protection. The many changes include an update
of the Visible Emission Standard, which has posed particular problems for industry because of
the increasing complexity of air emission sources since the last revisions in the 1970s. In
addition, the new regulations contain an expanded list of exemptions for operations that do
not need a permit at all, saving time and money for many companies.
