Techno Bits/Technical Bulletins OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH - ARCHIVED August 1, 2005 - OSHA Issues a Safety and Health Bulletin Regarding Combustible Dust in Industry On July 31st, 2005 OSHA issued a Safety and Health Information Bulletin (SHIB) regarding the hazards associated with combustible dust. The bulletin describes a series of dust explosions and accidents in which dust was a contributing factor. The SHIB also recommends a series of steps that employers can take to reduce the likelihood and severity of a dust explosion. This technical bulletin is intended to be informational in nature, and has been distributed mainly as a tool to help employers define hazards in their workplace. While in itself it is not a standard it does reference several existing standards such as: The General Duty Clause, Housekeeping, Ventilation, and several codes from the National Fire Protection Association.
