MWRA Phases Out TPH Method

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is phasing out the analytical method traditionally used for measuring Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), EPA 418.1 (Freon extraction followed by IR), in new and renewed industrial sewer permits. Instead, new permits are now requiring method 8100M or DEP - EPH. The reason for the change is that Freon is no longer manufactured in accordance with the Montreal protocol, laboratories wish to phase out the test, and the new methods use gas chromatography which provides the capability to discriminate between petroleum fractions.
